The Advantages of Biodiesel
April 21st, 2008
The notion of using biodegradable fuels for the average person seems a bit more like alternative fuel solutions for the scientist rather then for the everyday average person. Most alternative fuel solutions have a lot of development still to be worked out in order for it to be cost effective enough for the average consumer. However there are biodegradable fuels readily available now, for the average person that can help reduce emissions and can also be made at home. That fuel is called biodiesel.
The advantages of Biodiesel are it burns much cleaner then regular fossil fuels, is made from renewable energy sources and can actually be made from items found in your very own kitchen. Biodiesel contains no petroleum and as a result it is environmentally friendly. It is made using vegetable oil, alcohol, and lye, all of which are renewable energy sources and so when you power your car with biodiesel you are using a more green friendly fuel source.
The other advantages of Biodiesel are if you have a vehicle that runs on regular diesel then you can run that same car on Biodiesel without any modifications. That’s a great option for those people looking for renewable energy sources that are cost effective for the average person. Will biodiesel be the answer to all our fossil fuel problems? Hard to really say, we have really only just begun to look at alternative fuel solutions. So it is impossible to gauge what technology we might discover in 10-20 years but the advantages of using biodiesel today are far too many too be ignored.
Biodiesel can be purchased and bought directly from a manufacturer or from a distributor if you search around and you might even find a few gas stations selling biodiesel. But why buy biodiesel when making biodiesel at home is actually not as difficult as you might think.
How to make biodiesel is easy and you can find most of items you need from any hardware store and from your kitchen. By mixing lye together with antifreeze, sodium methoxide is formed. When you mix sodium methoxide with vegetable oil it transforms itself into two useful substances, glycerin and biodiesel. Glycerin is used in making soap and if you ever whip up a batch of biodiesel, you can use the resulting glycerin byproduct to make your own homemade soap.
Sure the recipe for biodiesel is a little more complex then I could really mention here in one simple article but the process I previously explained is in essence the simplicity behind the advantage of biodiesel. The best way to learn more about how to make biodiesel is to read more about the subject and use a book that details out the recipe for biodiesel.
Biodiesel is an amazing renewable energy source that should revolutionize the way we currently view fuel. Alternative fuel solutions like biodiesel can help reduce emissions and create a more green viable solution because you can make it yourself without any special modifications or costly tools. To learn more about how to make Biodiesel and its recipe I would suggest you check out making biodiesel at home and alternative fuel solutions. Both of which are excellent resources to learn more about this renewable energy source.
