Go Green with Renewable Energy Certificates

April 24th, 2008

Renewable energy certificatesHave you ever thought about powering your home with renewable energy but find it too expensive? Well you not alone, for most people the ability to go green just isn’t very practical due to the high costs associated with converting over to solar or wind power green energy.

What alot of people don’t know is that is possible to go green with renewable energy at a fraction of the cost. How? the answer is simple, go green with renewable energy certificates.

Renewable Energy Certificates (Recs) are also known as ‘Green Tags’  or “Tradable Renewable Certificates”. RECs are a great way to support environmental concerns by associating with renewable energy such as wind and solar. They are typically sold in kilowatt-hours or megawatt-hours. While Renewable Energy Certificates are not electricity per se, they have the same environmental effect as buying green energy electricity.

Here’s how Renewable Energy Certificates work.

For every unit of electricity generated from a renewable energy projects, there is a corresponding Renewable Energy Certificate that can be sold. Ok what does that mean? The average person buying electricty from your local utility company cannot dictate that they wish to recieve only green energy electrons (since electricity from both conventional and renewable energy projects are mixed together on the grid), they can however choose where their money goes. By buying Recs, consumers can choose to support renewable energy and other green energy projects. The money generated from the sale of Recs or (Green Tags) goes to develop new and existing green energy facilities. In essence you are sending a message that your home supports renewable energy through the purchase of tradable renewable certificates. In the end this helps to develop more green energy in your already existing power grid.

Recs, are purchased in addition to paying your regular energy bill, but it’s a small premium to pay to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and send a message that you wish to support more green energy on your power grid.
